The case for stillness in a 26-country life

Staying rooted while always in motion.

Movement is easy to mistake for progress. For years I confused the two — new city, new desk, new set of problems to out-run. The passport filled up faster than anything inside me settled.

Stillness, it turns out, isn’t the absence of motion. It’s the practice of being fully in one place while you’re in it — the coffee, the page, the conversation — instead of already half-packed for the next one.

I still move constantly. But I’ve stopped treating arrival as a problem to solve. Wherever the road puts me down, I try to be there completely. That, more than any address, is the closest thing to home I’ve found.
